IMPRESSIVE 19TH CENTURY EMPIRE CARVED BIRCH SOFA CIRCA 1830.

STUNNING STATEMENT PIECE OF FURNITURE WHICH IS BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN MADE IN NORTHERN FINLAND / RUSSIA.

ARCHED SHELL SHAPED BACK REST WHICH LINKS DOWN TO THE ROLL OVER SCROLLED ARMS. THE FRONT OF THE ARMS FORM A FANNED TAIL WHICH IS PART OF THE WINGED SERPENT THAT FACE OUT ON EACH SIDE OF THIS PIECE. THE DOG LIKE HEAD IS MIRRORED ON BACK AS WELL. FURTHER SCROLLING APPLIED SWAGS TO THE FRONT FRIEZE WITH BARLEY/WHEAT.

STANDING ON VERY SHALLOW SLEDGE FEET.

BLACK STRIPED COVERING IS CLEARLY A RECENT ADDITION AND IS IN GOOD ORDER, IT IS ALSO COVERED OVER THE BACK IN THE SAME. SEAT HAS BEEN RE-UPHOLSTERED WITH CONVENTIONAL SPRINGS. THE BLACK FABRIC PRODUCES A RICH CONTRAST TO THE VIBRANT BIRCH WOOD.

VERY MINOR SURFACE MARKS TO WOODWORK. A STUNNING PIECE THAT WOULD WORK WELL ANYWAY FROM HOME TO HOTEL FOYER.
