Description

This rare Swedish pine chest, circa 1730, is a beautiful piece of folk art with traces of original paint, decorative metal strap work and hinges, and a rich patina earned over nearly 300 years. The inside of the lid is hand painted with a labyrinth and eyes, symbols of pagan beliefs still strong in Sweden at the time, while the fitted candle box retains its original paint. Showing surface marks, fading and old historical repairs but in good condition, it retains its original lock (without key).

RARE AND BEAUTIFUL SWEDISH PINE CHEST. TRACES OF ORIGINAL PAINT TO THE OUTSIDE WITH DECORATIVE METAL STRAP WORK AND HINGES, WOODWORK HAS TAKEN ON A GREAT PATINA IN ITS NEAR 300 YEAR LIFE TIME.

INTERIOR OF BOX LID IS HAND PAINTED WITH A LABYRINTH AND EYES, THESE WERE USED TO SYMBOLISE PAGAN BELIEFS WHICH WERE STILL STRONG DURING THIS PERIOD IN SWEDEN. FURTHER FITTED WITH CANDLE BOX WHICH STILL BARES ITS ORIGINAL PAINT.

OBVIOUS SURFACE MARKS/FADING AND OLD HISTORICAL REPAIRS, BUT IN GOOD CONDITION. ORIGINAL LOCK BUT NO KEY.
