Description

A charming book-shaped keepsake box in olive wood, Italian and circa 1890, with an inlaid top depicting musical instruments and flowers within a mosaic border. The front is hand painted with the word 'Souvenir', and the base slides back to reveal a secret keyhole and further hidden compartment. Velvet lined inside, it shows only minor surface marks.

UNUSUAL ITALIAN KEEP SAKE BOX MADE IN OLIVE WOOD. INLAID TOP SURFACE WITH MUSICAL INSTRUMENT, FLOWERS AND A FAUX PEELED BACK CORNER, FINISHED IN A MOSAIC BORDER. FRONT OF THE BOX WITH HAND PAINTED ‘SOUVENIR’ AND ROMAN NUMERAL LABELLED BOOK ENDS. BOX CURRENTLY HAS NO KEY, BUT IT DOES HAVE A FEATURE WHERE THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX SLIDES BACK AND THE MIDDLE BOOK END SLIDES DOWN TO REVEAL A SECRET KEY HOLE, THIS ALSO ALWAYS ACCESS TO FURTHER SECRET SLIDING COMPARTMENT.

VELVET LINED INTERIOR, COMPLETE WITH ORIGINAL INK STAIN.
