Description

A handsome Victorian mahogany campaign writing slope, circa 1860, bound in brass with strapping and corner braces and a blank cartouche to the lid. The working lock opens to a later baize-covered writing surface, while the interior reveals storage wells, a pen tray and compartments for ink bottles. A brass pin conceals a side drawer, and a clever catch releases two secret drawers. Recently re-polished in our workshop, it shows only expected minor surface marks and is ready for everyday use.

GOOD QUALITY MILITARY-CAMPAIGN WRITING SLOPE, WITH SECRET COMPARTMENTS.

RECTANGULAR SHAPED BOX WITH BRASS STRAPPING AND CORNER BRACES, BLANK CARTOUCHE ON THE LID AND AROUND THE KEYHOLE. WORKING LOCK AND KEY OPENS TO FORM A WRITING SURFACE WHICH IS COVERED IN LATER BAIZE. SLOPE FOLDS ON ITSELF TO REVEAL WELLS FOR STORAGE IN 2 COMPARTMENTS. TOP SECTION FITTED WITH PEN TRAY, 2 SLOPES AND COMPARTMENTS FOR INK BOTTLES. REMOVING THE BRASS PIN ALLOWS ACCESS TO A DRAWER TO THE SIDE, ALSO A CATCH WHICH ACTIVATES A SPRING LOADED PANEL TO ALLOW ACCESS TO 2 SECRET DRAWERS.

NO INK BOTTLES INCLUDED. EXPECTED MINOR SURFACE MARKS AND VERY MINOR LOSSES TO BOTTOM EDGE. RECENTLY RE-POLISHED IN OUR WORKSHOP AND READY FOR EVERYDAY USE.
