Description

This large Flemish carved oak cabinet, circa 1870, is a cupboard of grand proportions in the Gothic Revival taste. Profusely carved throughout, it comprises two sections: an upper cupboard with egg and dart carving and doors flanked by carved cherubs and shells, above a lower section with a brushing slide, drawers and a further double door cupboard. Transport labels from Germany and Sweden remain on the reverse. The deep dark colour shows flashes of natural oak, with expected minor surface marks commensurate with age.

UNDERSTATED CORNICE DECORATED WITH EGG AND DART CARVING WITH FURTHER CARVED PANELS BELOW. SMALL DOUBLE DOOR CUPBOARD CONTAINING A SINGLE SHELF. CARVINGS ON THESE DOORS APPEAR TO SHOW DOGS APPREHENDING PEOPLE. DOORS FLANKED EITHER SIDE BY CARVED CHERUBS AND SHELLS. OPEN STORAGE APERTURE SUPPORTED BY 3 CARVED SUPPORTS.

BOTTOM SECTION WITH BRUSHING SLIDE AND 2 DRAWERS BELOW. LARGE DOUBLE DOOR CUPBOARD CONTAINING A FURTHER SHELF. DOOR FRONTS DECORATED BY CARVED SCENES OF FOLKLORE STORIES. FLANKED EITHER SIDE BY COLUMNS AND STANDING ON A SHAPED PLINTH BASE.

TRANSPORT LABELS FROM GERMANY AND SWEDEN ON THE REVERSE. DEEP DARK COLOUR WITH FLASHES OF THE NATURAL OAK COMING THROUGH.
