This rustic Chinese hardwood stool dates to circa 1890 and is made from character wood, with the knots and splits of the timber left visible in the shaped seat. Standing on four legs united by stretchers, it carries expected surface marks and age splits consistent with its age, and works equally well as a side table or extra seating.
